Good morning Blerders and Nerders!I hope everyone is having a great Thanksgiving break so far! I’m currently visiting my parentals in MD for Thanksgiving so I shall be in a food coma tomorrow. Since that will be the case, I wanted to make sure I get this post out today. I haven’t done a WCW in a long while so I thought I should do one of my favorite small characters in one my favorite anime series.
Canary or Canaria in the manga, is a female apprentice butler to the Zoldyck Family and is supervised by Zeno. Canary is extremely loyal to Killua, one of the protagonists of Hunter X Hunter but she doesn’t really show it. The first time I saw her, I was pleasantly surprised. Especially when she basically beat Gon down like he stole something when he was trying to save Killua (I know Gon wasn’t really fighting but still…its Gon). What makes Canary special is the fact that she is loyal, resilient and unknowingly strong. I say unknowingly because we don’t know how strong she really is. Since she is a butler of the Goldyck Family, her strength is pretty much up there but it hasn’t been compared to Gon or Killua. We see instances that show that the butlers are much stronger than even our protagonists but it’s not really explored aside of seeing some of their strength in the last arc. There are actually two versions of Canary, one in the 1999 anime and the other in 2011.
The major difference is the color of the hair and the color of the eyes. One could say the 1999 version show’s her of mixed race but that hasn’t been confirmed. In both iterations, she’s a bad ass.
There aren’t many black characters in anime that are more than side characters (which Canary is unfortunately) but her presence sort of sticks with you. She’s not major but she does just enough to make you think about her in certain parts of the story. I enjoy seeing her because she is a complete badass and no one can take that away from her. She’s a great cosplay character as well which I enjoy seeing. I honestly wish there was more back story to her and she was involved more but we can only hope and see in the future.
That’s all for this weeks WCW. I know it was a short one but not all of these will be super long unfortunately. What do you think of Canary? Let me know in the comments! I’m still getting back in my groove so bare with me! Until next time, Nerd out!

It’s been a long time since I’ve watched the original Hunter X Hunter series. I almost forgot about that character. Even though she had a brief appearance, she made a good impact. Canary/Kanariya is certainly a Black anime character that is represented well and that one can take seriously.
