Do you remember Outlaw Star? For those of you that haven’t seen it, here is a short synopsis from MyAnimeList:

“Gene Starwind has always dreamed of piloting his own ship out into the vast sea of stars. Unfortunately, not all dreams come true, as he spends his days working odd jobs alongside his partner, James Hawking, on the small planet Sentinel III instead. However, this all takes a turn when the duo takes on a job from Rachel Sweet who, unbeknownst to them, is actually a treasure-hunting outlaw. Tasked with protecting a mysterious girl known as Melfina, the meeting irrevocably changes the pair’s lives as they are sent out into the great unknown aboard the highly advanced ship, Outlaw Star.”

Good, we’re all caught up. For those of you that have seen this particular series, didn’t you feel like there should of been more? I know the big bad was defeated and Melfina is alive and well but did you feel like there was more to be told? Okay okay, maybe I’m being selfish and want to relive the joys of my youth. Or it could be because I always go back and watch old series and find myself wanting more…needing more.

The Characters:

I thought this series had some very interesting people throughout this short series. As annoying Aisha is, I feel like there was more to her besides her pride of being from the Kataro-Kataro (sp?) Empire. She was intelligent even though she was unnecessarily impulsive at times.

And what about Suzuka? She was mysterious, strong and always knew when to say the right things. Her past is something I always wanted to explore. How was she tied to the Kei pirates and who trained her to use a bokken? I haven’t seen anyone that skilled with a “non-deadly” sword since Rouroni Kenshin…even though she had no problem killing if necessary unlike him. Is there something in her past that would cause problems in future adventures?

And finally James Hawkings aka Jim. He was one character that was low-key shitted on throughout the whole series up until near the end of the series. He played second fiddle to Gene, then became the third, forth, etc fiddle as the other characters filled. Everyone else had some sort of depth to them while we learned a little about Jim, we really don’t know much about him. Yeah he’s the son of a famous computer hacker and he’s a child genius but what else is there to Jim? We know he’s the polar opposite of Gene and its that fact makes him important to Gene and the crew of the Outlaw Star.

More….I just want more

Maybe I’m selfish, but Outlaw Star is an anime that I wanted to go on for at least a few more seasons (it’s like there is a theme here). It introduced different aliens and planets and events that I wanted to see more of. I’m a stickler for a good story-line and character development and I feel that Outlaw Star would of become more of a classic than it already is.

What do you think? Did you want want more Outlaw Star or were you okay with what we got when we got it? What did you wish Outlaw Star explored more of? Did you have a favorite character? Find out next time on Drag…wait wrong series. Let me know in the comments! If you have a series I should consider for this series, send us an email at noirnerdzone@gmail.com! Until next time, Nerd out!

  1. I miss Outlaw Star. That was a fun little show. It’s also crazy to think that it predates Cowboy Bebop and certainly before Firefly which used some similar concepts. There was Angel Links which takes place in the same universe, but it’s nowhere near as good as Outlaw Star. I know it was based on a manga, so I assume there was more story going on over there.

Random fact: Aisha’s Japanese VA is the same person who played Asuka in Evangelion while her English dub VA is the same person who played Rogue in the 90s X-Men cartoon. By the way, her race is called Ctarl-Ctarl.
