I randomly found this anime while scrolling on Hulu. I wasn’t really looking for anything in particular, literally was just bored and scrolling. After reading the description, I took a chance and started watching more. This anime is very well drawn and the plot is easy to follow but also a little dark. Like seriously dark. Not the whole series but there are certainly some very dark parts. There is a group of characters you meet (SPOILER ALERT) who’s only purpose is to die to help move the story along.
Let me give you a short synopsis of this anime:
“In 2012, the world allegedly comes to an end at the hands of a “human-made” virus, ravaging the global populace and leaving only children under the age of thirteen untouched. It is at this time that vampires emerge from the recesses of the earth, likely followed by age-old horrors of the dark thought only to be myth. The vampires sweep the earth and claim it in a single violent stroke, subjugating the remnants of humanity and leading them beneath the surface to safety. This “protection” comes at the price of donating blood to their captors. At the age of twelve, Yūichirō and his friend and fellow orphan Mikaela plotted to escape along with the children in Hyakuya Orphanage. However, this resulted in their deaths and Mikaela sacrifices himself in order for Yūichirō to escape and be saved by members of the Moon Demon Company, an extermination unit of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army. Four years later, Yūichirō dedicates his life to destroy vampires and seek revenge against them for murdering his “family.” At the same time, it is revealed that Mikaela is still alive and is a vampire that Yūichirō has sworn to exterminate.” (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seraph_of_the_End)
I must admit that this anime started out a little confusing for me. Mainly because I wasn’t really focused on watching it initially (it was a spur of the moment thing) but I eventually ended up liking it enough to finish both seasons. This is certainly not an anime you should watch with your kids. Yes it has some childish scenes but overall it is a very adult themed show. It has heavy themes about loyalty, friendship and family and the situations that cause problems for those relationships. You meet a lot of interesting characters to which you learn some of their backstories which make them even more interesting. It forces you to attach yourself to them and want to learn more about the world they are in.
Like most anime, this started as a light novel/manga which the animation is derived from. Those asking for a third season (like me) are more than likely going to be disappointed. Supposedly, there is not enough source material to justify a whole third season so we will have to play the waiting game and hope for the best.
If you are on Hulu (or Crunchyroll, I think it’s there now) and your looking for a short anime series to try, check out Seraph of the End. It’s long enough to enjoy and short enough to allow you to check out other anime at the same time. This anime gets a 7.49/10 from me. Check it out and let me know what you think! As always, Nerd out!
