GSS: Double ZZ Gundam

Welcome back all and Happy Halloween! The first Gundam series I want to spotlight is Double Zeta Gundam or ZZ Gundam. In my personal opinion, it’s one of the blah Gundam series in the UC storyline. I’m not saying it’s bad but compared to other series in the UC, its one of the ones that is lacking.

ZZ Gundam is a direct continuation of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam which continues the story of the Anti-Earth Union Group (AEUG) battleship Argama after the last episode. This time around, Bright Noa recruits a group of teenage junk collectors (because having kids fight in wars is commonplace in Gundam!) to help battle Neo Zeon. This series introduces the new (and huge) ZZ Gundam and includes the Zeta Gundam, the Gundam Mk. II, and the Hyaku Shiki from Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. Compared to the first two Gundam series, ZZ Gundam is a bit more light-hearted in comparison. With this series being a bit more light-hearted, it sort of diminished the seriousness of what exactly was going on in the actual show.

The Good:

With this being a direct continuation of Zeta Gundam, we are reunited with a lot of the characters as well as mobile suits from the first two entries to the Gundam series. It’s nice and warming to see the continuation of the overall story with old and new characters. The development of familiar characters throughout the series is great to see and watch unfold.

The mobile suits featured in this series are just as awesome as Mobile Zeta Gundam if not better. Bringing back older mobile suits and including a new main mobile suit gives the show a bit of robot diversity (sounds funny I know). The ZZ Gundam alone is an awesome mobile suit to behold. It’s essentially a heavily armored and bigger version of the Zeta Gundam. It’s not known for it’s maneuverability but it’s power is damn near unmatched.

The Bad:

While the story is continued from the first two series, this one is a bit lacking in some areas. Compared to Zeta Gundam, ZZ is fairly light-hearted and lacking the established Gundam “oompff”. “Gundam” and “Zeta Gundam” were great series with a very serious tone which made the studio (or maybe it’s what people wanted) have the next series be a little less serious. Being a lighter series, isn’t a bad thing but paired with the setting of a war with geo politics and child soldiers doesn’t really mesh well with comedy. I appreciate them trying to make the series a little more light and fun but a lot of the jokes and situations were forced and didn’t really contribute positively to the story.

The Verdict:

ZZ Gundam is an interesting addition to the Universal Century story. Having returning characters and new mobile suit keep you watching. The story-line stays in line with the previous two series but the forced comedy didn’t really sit well with me in the end. Some of the jokes were stale and really had no real impact on the story.

Overall, I give ZZ Gundam a 6.5/10. It’s not the best in the series and not even one of the better ones but it’s watchable. The mobile suits alone make it an interesting series. I’m not sure if ZZ is streaming on any of the apps but I would check Hulu or Crunchyroll if you are interested in watching! What do you think? Have you watched this series before? If so, what did you think? Let us know in the comments! Until next time, Nerd out!
