Anime Spotlight: Overlord!
There has been quite a few anime shows based on characters being trapped in video games after the premier of Sword Art Online. I guess you can call it over-saturation but some decent anime have come from this. Overlord (imo) is one of them. Here is a short synopsis from MyAnimeList.com:
“The final hour of the popular virtual reality game Yggdrasil has come. However, Momonga, a powerful wizard and master of the dark guild Ainz Ooal Gown, decides to spend his last few moments in the game as the servers begin to shut down. To his surprise, despite the clock having struck midnight, Momonga is still fully conscious as his character and, moreover, the non-player characters appear to have developed personalities of their own!
Confronted with this abnormal situation, Momonga commands his loyal servants to help him investigate and take control of this new world, with the hopes of figuring out what has caused this development and if there may be others in the same predicament.”
Unlike Sword Art Online and even Log Horizon, this “trapped in a game” anime doesn’t feature a lot of other human characters that have also been trapped in the game. So it’s basically one guy stuck in a MMO with the NPC’s having their own personalities and he can’t revert to even looking like his human self. Currently there is only one season but season 2 is expected to be coming out within the next year. I found this anime one day while I was searching for anime dubs (don’t start with me) on Hulu. If you have seen Log Horizon, then this anime is kind of similar to that with the exception of it just being one human character instead of a host of them. From watching it, I enjoy the thought process the main character has when trying to figure out the new world he’s in. It’s different, and at the same time, the same as other “in-game” anime but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Have you seen this anime before? If so, what did you think about it? If you haven’t seen it, check it out! It’s on Hulu and the Funimation app. Until next time, Nerd out!
