Now these are some of the anime sequels coming to Crunchyroll next year! I know there are many more but these are some of the sequels that stuck out to me (biased, I know. Bite me). So lets get into to it!
Overlord! Season 2
I’m not sure how many of you have watched the first season of Overlord but it was a good one. If you haven’t heard of Overlord, let me give you a brief synopsis of it. In the world of Yggdrasil (another game anime!), the servers were shutting down. Momonga, a powerful mage character decides to spend his time reminiscing back on the game and the friends he played with in his guild “Ainz Ooal Gown”. When the clock strikes midnight and the servers supposedly go offline, Momonga realizes that he is stuck and fully conscious as his character from the game. Along with that, the NPC’s developed their own personalities. So instead of sitting on his butt, he investigates the world with hopes of figuring out what happened and how to get out of it along with finding other players stuck in the same predicament. Yes, I know this is another “VR game” anime but it takes a slightly different route than Sword Art Online. The first season is on Hulu and Funimation so check it out when you get a chance.
Seven Deadly Sins: Revival of The Commandments
Are you ready for more sin!? Okay, not that kind of sin (ya nasties). The Netflix “original” The Seven Deadly Sins is coming back with an actual second season in 2018! When I say “actual” I mean more than the 4 episode teasers they released earlier this year. If you read the manga, then you know the next story arc is going to be flames. But if you aren’t up on the first season and a half, then get to Netflix (or use someone’s password) and check it out. Check out the trailer below for season 2!
Cardcaptor Sakura: Clear Card
I’m going to be honest…I’ve never been a big fan of Cardcaptor Sakura. People call it a classic but it never really spoke to me. Maybe I’ll try it again before this new arc comes out but don’t get your hopes up. After a long hiatus from television, Cardcaptor Sakura will be coming back with a brand new story. Here is a synopsis from AnimeList.com: “Fourteen-year-old Sakura starts junior high school along her friends, including Syaoran, who had just returned to Tomoeda. After having a dream with a mysterious cloaked figure, all of Sakura’s cards turn blank and are rendered powerless, thus she starts her quest to find out what is wrong. In doing so, Sakura and her allies discover and capture new transparent cards using a new key.”
According to my friends who have watched and read the manga from the beginning, the series gets really good and deep. I base my perception from when it was on WBKids before Yu-Gi-Oh and after M.i.B: The Series. Check out the trailer below…it’s in Japanese but it looks pretty!

One Punch Man: Season 2
I mean, its One Punch Man….how can you not be excited? The smash hit (pun intended) comes back for a second season in 2018 and we cannot wait. Everyone is anticipating the next set of monsters and heroes that want to take on the currently unbeatable man. One thing I did hear was that the studio changed so I am not sure if the visuals will be as crisp as the first season. The manga is still ongoing so if you want a little heads up on what the anime can go into, then grab a few chapters and get to reading. I haven’t seen a set date for 2018 but be on the lookout for teaser trailers coming in the next few weeks.
Tokyo Ghoul:Re
I am aware that the pic above is of the the manga cover but bear with me. Those of you that have watched and followed Tokyo Ghoul in the past, get hype. For those that haven’t, catch up. Tokyo Ghoul is a Mystery/Horror/Psychological anime with plenty of action and thought provoking scenes. It’s a mature anime so I wouldn’t recommend this to watch with your younger kids. We’ve been waiting for another series since the first ended in 2015. Toonami ran the first series earlier this year but I’m unsure if it is still running on there but feel free to check. Currently no date has been identified but will be coming sometime early 2018.
FLCL 2 & 3
I’ve done a post about FLCL 2 &3 before but it’s coming up soon so why not do it again. This anime was an instant classic with it’s short, seemingly nonsensical episodes and wonderful visuals. Toonami is developing the next 2 seasons. Here is a synopsis from anime news network:
“In the new season of FLCL, many years have passed since Naota and Haruhara Haruko shared their adventure together. Meanwhile, the war between the two entities known as Medical Mechanica and Fraternity rages across the galaxy. Enter Hidomi, a young teenaged girl who believes there is nothing amazing to expect from her average life, until one day when a new teacher named Haruko arrives at her school. Soon enough, Medical Mechanica is attacking her town and Hidomi discovers a secret within her that could save everyone, a secret that only Haruko can unlock.
But why did Haruko return to Earth? What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota? And where did the human-type robot ‘Canti’ go?” (https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news)
Expect to see this near the end of 2017/early 2018.
Fairy Tail: The Final Season
All good things must come to an end. It’s been a long good run for Fairy Tale anime and manga. If you are not familiar with Fairy Tale (episodes on Crunchyroll and Hulu), it follows the adventures of Natsu Dragneel and Lucy and the powerful wizard’s Guild “Fairy Tail”. The manga ended earlier this summer so if you want to see the end of the story before the animation, read the manga asap! The last story arc in the manga lasted around 125 chapters so expect maybe 50-60 episodes when the animation comes out. With that amount of speculated episodes, expect the “final” season to be finished by the end of 2018 or early 2019.
Sword Art Online: Alicization
Look another Sword Art Online series! Okay that sound a little more sarcastic than it needed to be. I’m actually kind of excited for this new series. I highly enjoyed the first season because it was something new, something different. The second season was kind of….bleh to me, but to each their own. But this new season seems a little like the first in a way. Read the synopsis below:
Kirito awakens in a vast, fantastical forest filled with towering trees. In his search for clues to the truth of his surroundings, he encounters a young boy who seems to know him. He ought to be a simple NPC, but the depth of his emotions seem no different than a human. As they search for the boy’s parents, Kirito finds a peculiar memory returning to him. A memory from his own childhood, of this boy and a girl, too, with golden hair, and a name he should have never forgotten—Alice. (MyAnimelist)
From that synopsis, it seems more Kirito centered which is something I’m looking forward to. Not saying the other characters aren’t great but Kirito kind of got lost a little in season 2. Fans have been clamoring for this arc from the light novel for a while now and they are finally getting their wish. This arc starts in volume 9 of the light novel and ends in volume 18 so it will be a decent sized season. I haven’t seen anything yet about when the release date will be for sure but it’s expected to be out by Spring 2018. Check out the teaser below!
That’s all I have for upcoming 2018 anime sequels. Are there some that I missed? Please let post some in the comments! I already have a huge backlog of anime to watch but I would like to add more to my collection. Any other suggestions? Feel free to email us at noirnerdzone@gmail.com! Until next time, Nerd out!
I’ve never watched Cardcaptor either, but like you I’ve only heard amazing things. Maybe I should try watching the first season before the new one starts up. I’m excited for Overlord, One Punch Man, Tokyo Ghoul:Re and Seven Deadly Sins,
I didn’t even know Fairy Tail ended, so I kind of have to finish it now.
Yeah I’m hella chapters behind on Fairy Tail so I gotta catch up. I can’t wait for Overlord. I recently re-watched the series so it got me hype again.
